$60,000 Gift Helps Red Cloud Match Challenge Grant

Red Cloud--The estate of Lyndall Harris, who died in June, 2001, is providing $60,000 to the Red Cloud Community Foundation.  The $60,000 gift helps Red Cloud complete the $100,000 required to match a $100,000 challenge grant issued to the Foundation last May.  This is the first community to complete its challenge under the new Nebraska Legacy Challenge initiative of the Nebraska Community Foundation.

The subsequent $200,000 will be managed as a permanent endowment, providing future funding for community betterment for Red Cloud and the surrounding area.  Barbara Sprague, President of the Red Cloud Community Foundation, said,  “I’m just overwhelmed…we’re so grateful to Lyndall for his generosity and public spirit.  Lyndall must have loved his hometown very much.”

Lyndall, the son of Verlin and Gladys Harris of Red Cloud, was a 1968 graduate of Red Cloud High School and received his Associate’s Degree from Fairbury Junior College and Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  He was active in community service throughout his life.  As a young man he was involved in 4-H and from 1974 was employed as an accountant with the Salvation Army.

Marc Haskins of Red Cloud, a long-time family friend and financial advisor, said, “Lyndall cared very much for his family, friends and his hometown of Red Cloud.  This was one way Lyndall could say thank you for the blessings he received throughout his life.”

With this gift, the Red Cloud Community Foundation has raised $100,000 in matching cash and in-kind gifts since May 2001.  Eighty-seven (87) individuals, families or businesses have contributed to the effort.  An additional $29,800 has been confirmed in multi-year pledges for the endowment fund.  “What is remarkable about this gift is that it helps Red Cloud complete its matching requirements in just one year,” said Jeff Yost, executive vice-president of the Nebraska Community Foundation.

The donors of the $100,000 challenge are Frank and Shirley Sibert of Valentine, both natives of Red Cloud.  The Siberts had given the community four years to complete the matching requirements.

The Red Cloud Community Foundation is an affiliated fund of the Nebraska Community Foundation headquartered in Lincoln.  The Nebraska Community Foundation is a non-profit charitable 501(c)(3) corporation that provides financial management, strategic development and education/training services to communities, organizations and donors throughout Nebraska.  The Foundation, founded in 1994, has over 160 affiliated funds operating in 67 of Nebraska’s 93 counties.  The Foundation and its affiliated funds have nearly $15 million in assets under management, and have disbursed over $20 million to community-based projects throughout Nebraska in the last five years.
