May 30, 2002 $51,689 Awarded to Valley County Projects from Wozab TrustOrd—An entrepreneurial development program for Valley County; hand held radios for the North Loup Emergency Response Team; and a building to house flags, crosses and other equipment for the Arcadia American Legion Post #251 are among the 25 recipients of $51,689 from the John and Alyce Wozab Trust. This is the third year of funding from the Trust, according to Bob Sevenker of Ord, a director of the Valley County Foundation, which administers the Trust. The three-year total is now 75 grants totaling $159,759. Valley County communities benefiting from the grants include Arcadia, Elyria, North Loup and Ord. There were 29 requests for funding, totaling $87,422.73. The largest grants, each at $5,000, went to the Valley County Hospital Foundation at Ord for pulmonary function testing equipment; the VFW American Legion in Ord for a building to store hospital equipment loaned to the public; and the grant to the North Loup Emergency Response Team. The Ord Township Library will receive $4,000 to purchase a globe, books, videos, audio books, etc. The Arcadia American Legion Post grant is for $3,750 and $3,234 goes to the Arcadia Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department for a high band radio system. The grant to the Valley County Economic Development Board for the entrepreneurial development program is for $3,000. Because of a $1.2 million gift from the Wozabs in 1998, the Valley County Foundation, an affiliated fund of the Nebraska Community Foundation, is able to award the grants to local groups dedicated to improving the quality of life in Valley County. The Valley County Foundation can receive tax-deductible gifts to support more community betterment projects. Sevenker said the Valley County Foundation grants committee attempts to award grants to project that they feel the Wozabs would have supported. Each year, the committee has received more grant requests than it is able to award. Maximum grant awards have been $5,000. He also said the committee is reviewing the criteria they wish to use for scholarship awards. Last year, as a chapter of the Nebraska Dollars for Scholars organization, three $1,000 scholarships were given to non-traditional students. “We are hoping other current and former Valley County residents will discover the tremendous legacy John and Alyce Wozab have left to Valley County, and will leave their own legacy in future years. The good work resulting from these grants will help encourage others to give back to their hometown,” said Jeff Yost, executive vice-president of the Nebraska Community Foundation. The Nebraska Community Foundation is a non-profit, charitable organization that provides financial management, strategic development and education/training services to communities, organizations and donors throughout Nebraska. It was incorporated in August 1993 and received its 501(C)(3) charitable foundation status from the Internal Revenue Service in 1994. It accepted its first affiliated funds in 1994 and now has over 160 affiliated funds operating in 78 of the state’s 93 counties. Other grants:
