Harold and Marilyn Rink
Endowment Building, Gifts of Tangible Personal Property
Harold and Marilyn Rink of Pender, Nebraska made a challenge gift with the contribution of seven antique tractors. The tractors were sold by the Nebraska Community Foundation, for the benefit of its affiliated fund the Pender-Thurston Education and Community Foundation Fund.
The tractor in the photo was purchased in 1973 for $1,500, restored, and sold at auction in 2006 for $86,500. The capital gains tax was avoided by contributing the tractors prior to their sale. The Rinks have used their gift as a challenge gift to the community to build an unrestricted endowment to benefit their community for future generations. The community answered the challenge and successfully raised more than a half million dollars in donations and planned gifts within a few short years.
