The Nebraska City Community Foundation Youth Council plans a busy year of activities to help improve Nebraska City.
The group kicked off the year by purchasing ³Seasons Greetings² signs for the entrances to the town. Zachry Construction donated $10,000 toward the project, and the Youth Council had already raised funds for the effort, which also includes replacing decorations and lights.
Public Properties Director Dan Giittinger said the city is grateful for the new signs and pledge to help beautify the city. “We really appreciate the effort that this group has put forward,” he said.
“The city¹s Christmas lights were getting to be in pretty sad shape. Some of them were as old as 40 years old, so any effort that gets put forth to help us replace these is a great thing for the city and the community.”
Ben Rice, Youth Council president, said the project is the group’s “first step toward downtown revitalization and restoration.”
Rice said plans for this year include planting flowers in the bumpouts, planting trees and replacing cement. He said all of the projects are part of the effort to improve the “general appearance and aesthetics of Nebraska City.” “There is a lot to be done by the Nebraska City Community Foundation Youth Board this year and we¹re looking forward to it,” Rice said.
The group plans a street dance for August similar to the “Celebrate Nebraska City” dance the Nebraska City Community Foundation put on last year.
