New Members Elected to the Nebraska Community Foundation Board of Directors

Norfolk—Nebraska leaders from Hyannis, York, Atkinson and Lincoln were elected to the Board of Directors of the Nebraska Community Foundation at its annual meeting in Norfolk Friday, November 15.  New officers of the board were also elected and five new affiliated funds were accepted.

The new board members are Al Davis of Hyannis, Kelly Holthus of York, Janet Krotter Chvala of Atkinson and Susan Ugai of Lincoln.  Elected as officers were Ron Parks of Papillion, chair; Kathy Thuman of Maywood, vice-chair; Beverly Pollock of Ogallala, secretary; Mark Graff of McCook, treasurer.  Frank Sibert of Valentine is the immediate past chair and also serves on the executive committee.

Elected as honorary board members were Nancy Hoch of Nebraska City, Jeanene Wehrbein of Plattsmouth and Mimi Waldbaum of Omaha.  Hoch is an incorporator of the Nebraska Community Foundation and has served nine years on the board.  Wehrbein and Waldbaum have served six years.

Re-elected to the board were Jim Fehringer of Columbus, Rodrigo Lopez of Omaha, Bob Stowell of Ord and Kathy Thuman of Maywood.

The new affiliated funds are the Creighton Community Foundation Fund, serving Creighton and the surrounding area in Knox County; the D&A Donor-Advised Fund, established anonymously to provide ongoing support to six Valley and Sherman county charities and the Nebraska Humanities Council; the Nebraska Foundation for Agricultural Awareness Fund; The Parks Family Gift Annuity Fund established by Ron and Judy Parks, with the Nebraska Community Foundation as the beneficiary of the annuity remainder; and the Pierce Carnegie Library Preservation Fund, to receive gifts to move and preserve the Carnegie Library building in Pierce.

Davis is the owner and manager of the Olo Ranch and the Verde Valley Guest ranch near Hyannis.  He is a graduate of the University of Denver and attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City.  He is a founder, past president and board member of the Village Players in Hyannis and currently is president of the board of education for School District 143 at Hyannis.  He is also a member of the Sandhills Cattle Association Board of Directors.

Holthus is chairman, president and CEO of the Cornerstone Bank of York and chairman of the Albion National Bank, NebraskaLand National Bank of North Platte and City State Bank of Sutton.  He has served as president of the American Bankers Association and the Nebraska Bankers Association; chairman of the Nebraska State Chamber of Commerce and Industry; and as a member of the Board of Directors of the U.S. Chamber.  He is a past president of the York Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the York City Council for 11 years. 

Krotter Chvala is an attorney and shareholder in the law firm of Strope, Krotter & Gotschall, P.C., with offices in O’Neill and Atkinson.  A native of Spencer, she received her undergraduate degree, with a major in accounting, and her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  She is a former Deputy Holt County Attorney, Wheeler County Attorney and Boyd County Attorney.  She is also a stockholder in Wm. Krotter Co., a 111-year-old fourth generation retail lumber/hardware/automobile business with locations in O’Neill, Atkinson, Stuart, Bassett, Ainsworth, Spencer and Gregory, SD.

Ugai is a Lincoln attorney and former Nebraska Assistant Attorney General.  She also was employed as a legal services developer for the Nebraska Department on Aging and was City Attorney for her hometown of North Platte.  She received her undergraduate and Juris Doctor degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  She is the president-elect of the Friendship Home Board of Directors and vice-president of the Woods Charitable Fund Board of Directors in Lincoln.

The Nebraska Community Foundation, established in 1993, helps rural Nebraska put charitable giving to work for community and economic development.  There are 150 affiliated funds, including 79 funds based in a single town, several communities working together or county-wide funds.  It has assets of $14 million and over $27 million has been distributed for projects and programs through the affiliated funds.
