Irv Omtvedt Elected to Nebraska Community Foundation Board 

Irv Omtvedt(Lincoln)  Irv Omtvedt, Vice Chancellor Emeritus for the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, was elected to a three-year term on the Nebraska Community Foundation’s Board of Directors at its quarterly board meeting in Minden on August 9, 2002.  

Omtvedt retired from the University of Nebraska in 2000.  He is a native of north central Wisconsin and received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Oklahoma State University.  Omtvedt joined the faculty at UNL in 1975 as Head of the Department of Animal Science from Auburn University where he was Associate Director of the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station.  Prior to being appointed IANR Vice Chancellor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1988, he served five years as Dean and Director for the Agricultural Research Division.  Other UNL administrative appointments included Interim Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs in 1996-97 and Vice Chancellor for Extended Education from 1997-99.  

Omtvedt has been active at the local, state, and national levels in several organizations and committees pertaining to higher education, distance education, biotechnology, leadership development, and rural development.  He currently serves on the Nebraska Rural Development Commission, on the Advisory Committee of the NU Public Policy Center, and as a member of the Steering Committee for the Food and Society Project of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges.  

Other action taken by the board at its quarterly meeting included accepting the following communities and organizations for affiliation: Hickman Community Foundation, Nebraska Jaycees Scholarship Fund, Ralston Community Foundation, Springfield Community Foundation Fund and TechFoundation Fund. 

The Nebraska Community Foundation exists to help concerned individuals mobilize charitable giving in support of the betterment of Nebraska communities and organizations.  The Foundation is a nonprofit 501(C)(3) charitable corporation providing financial management, strategic development, education/training services and affiliated fund status (allowing communities and organizations to achieve nonprofit charitable status without forming their own nonprofit corporation) to nearly 150 communities, organizations and donors across the state.  For more information, call 402/323-7330, or visit the website at: www.nebcommfound.org.
