Ord-Organizations from Arcadia, Ord, Comstock, and North Loup are among the 23 recipients of $41,570 from the John and Alyce Wozab Trust. The awards were announced Friday, May 16, 2003 at a joint meeting of the Valley County Foundation and the Nebraska Community Foundation in Ord. The Valley County Foundation is an affiliated fund of the Nebraska Community Foundation, which held its quarterly board meeting on May 15th and 16th in Ord and Burwell.
This is the fourth year of funding from the Trust, according to Bob Sevenker of Ord, a director of the Valley County Foundation, which administers the Trust. There have been 98 grants totaling $201,329 in the four years.
The largest grants, for $5,000 each, went to the Valley County Ministerial Association to fund "Power Team," a nationally recognized group with a strong anti-drug, anti-violence message, and to the Valley County Hospital for a cardiac treadmill with computerized EKG capabilities.
The North Loup Softball Association and the North Loup Fire and Rescue will each receive $3,000. Grants of $2,990 went to the Loup Valley Arts Council and $2,800 to the Ord Volunteer Fire Department. Grants of $2,500 each will go to The Gathering Place at Arcadia, Auble's Lake Trail for the City of Ord, and the Karp and Krow Club, Inc of Ord. The Comstock Rural Fire District received $1,500. The district is headquartered in Custer County, but serves rural residents in Valley County.
Because of a $1.2 million gift from the Wozabs in 1998, the Valley County Foundation Fund is able to award the grants to local groups dedicated to improving the quality of life in Valley County. The Valley County Foundation can receive tax-deductible gifts to support more community betterment projects.
Sevenker said the Valley County Foundation grants committee attempts to fund projects that they feel the Wozabs would have supported. Each year, the committee has received more grant requests than it has been able to award. Maximum grant awards have been $5,000.
"We are hoping other current and former Valley County residents will discover the tremendous legacy John and Alyce Wozab have left to Valley County, and will leave their own legacy in future years. The good work resulting from these grants will help encourage others to give back to their hometown," said Jeff Yost, executive vice-president of the Nebraska Community Foundation.
The Nebraska Community Foundation is a nonprofit, charitable organization that provides financial management, strategic development and education/training services to communities, organizations and donors throughout Nebraska. It was incorporated in August 1993 and received its 501(C)(3) charitable foundation status from the Internal Revenue Service in 1994. It accepted its first affiliated funds in 1994 and now has over 150 affiliated funds operating in 69 of the state's 93 counties.
