Hometown Intern – Averi Devish

Name: Averi Devish
Hometown: Columbus, Nebraska
Affiliated Fund: Columbus Area Future Fund
School: University of South Dakota

What projects are you working on this summer with your affiliated fund?
I am working at two Columbus organizations this summer. First, I am working with the Columbus Area United Way and promoting and running our Duck Race fundraiser which helps support Columbus Area United Way and their local non-profit partner agencies. I will also be working for the Columbus Area Future Fund by organizing and promoting their Welcoming Grant and helping in any other projects that develop.

Why did you want to take this opportunity to participate in this internship?
I wanted to return to my hometown this summer to work. I was told of this opportunity, and it sounded like the perfect chance to explore my passion for non-profit work and benefit my community.

How would you describe the experience so far?
This has been a great experience so far. I feel like I am truly helping both organizations get their goals accomplished. I am excited to see what else will be in store for me this summer.

What do you appreciate most about your community?
I appreciate how diverse my community is with different cultures and backgrounds residing here. However, Columbus still very much has the small-town feel of close family, safety, and good neighbors.

What excites you the most when you think about the future of your community?
I am excited to see how my community grows and expands. However, I feel like my community will always be a great place to raise a family and build roots. I loved growing up here, and I am excited to have it positively affect other kids raised in this community.

What are you looking for in a place to call home?
I think for me personally I am looking for a community that appreciates nature and outdoor living. I want a place that is safe and rooted in close family values. I want my future kids to be close with their grandparents just like I was when I was growing up.
